The profession of today Haitian radio and the music industry

The profession of today Haitian radio and the music industry.

The spoken press as we knew it in our community, no longer exists. Today's radio is a profession for anyone with interests and who have access to a computer and the internet. I remember once upon a time when radio was a respectable profession in Haiti. Radio Metropole, Haiti Inter, MBC etc back in those days, one has to spend a few years at a university to become a journalist so that the skill to speak or write can become a vehicle to embark on a long career in that institution. The great work left behind by icons like Jean Dominique, Bob Lemoine, Felix Lami, Jean-Claude Gilles and Guy Ford who is still with us today, is priceless and the others who continue to survive it in Haiti and elsewhere. Obviously, the youths of that industry have to emerge in order to make a name for themselves and replace those of past generations notably: Jean-Claude Vaval jr, Leroy Woodhave (Wawa) Patricia Latour, Guy Wewe, Bruno Carel philippe, Jean Celicourt etc.

In the field of social media such as Facebook and the others, the game is set for the inexperienced radio men. They do not need to verify their source of information. They simply get on the microphone and to them that's the spoken press. The existence to confirm and verify information for some is simply, obsolete. This is always the rule of the spoken and written press. Before any news reaching its audience, it must be always broadcasted with hard evidence in order to be effective. Now, this is a constant occurrence of this profession where the so-called radio personalities spew made-up stories or hearsay information which becomes the norm in the Haitian music industry. The door is largely open to the mediocrity of some of the Haitian radio industry. However, there is also a good segment of this industry that always respects the rules of information because they are the true professionals. Note that networks like: CNN, FOX NBC ABC and others have been at times the source of misconstrued facts of information. Nonetheless, that happens on rare occasions and they always apologize for their mistakes.

Those of us who believe and think with a microphone, they can erode someone reputation with misinformation, it is a macabre idea which must give pause to anyone who thinks about the importance of this institution. It seems like mediocrity is the menu du jour for some. We should not let any demagogue do a character assassination of an individual with a superficial lie without the true professional intervention of the press. If this is the case we can say to these individuals on the microphone: go ahead do your thing after all life goes on. This is a new game with dangerous complications, which I believe, deserves the attention of those who would like to protect its future and its honor. There are also those who are part of this industry, and the reason they are in it, it's because the passion for this job is also coded in their gene. Although there is a mischievous nature that is a part of this profession, radio as we know it will remain a voice of objectivity for those who believe in it and its existence.

Furthermore, there is absolutely nothing wrong when a member of the spoken press accepts funding in exchange for promotional services if the recipient reveals its source. On the other hand, when an individual is ready to expose another because he is paid to do so or he or she wants to be the first to make it to the airwaves without any evidence that can be verified, that's absurdity at the highest level. I'm just an observer who has been a witness of propagation in the field of information and based on my analysis, this field no longer belongs to some who have integrity and dedicated their entire lives to make an honest living.

This piece is an attempt to address the erroneous news or rumors by some unscrupulous people who have access to a microphone and the internet for the well-being of this profession that is called: radio the way it used to be.

This is a very good topic. I cannot blame anyone other than the government. They're the ones that's not regulating and enforcing the law. Thus no-one respects it. And it's not only in the music industry

Very solid thoughtful piece but it's too long. I really like the approach. Credibility means nothing in this field and it's a shame

Ernst,
The piece has to have details in order to be self-explanatory. It is not that long. There is also a French version. Reading is good for the soul and the brain cells.
